The English faculty members under the Secondary and Professional Education Department of Pangasinan State University Alaminos City Campus spearheaded an extension project, “Enhanced Written English Communication Skills Training” on December 15, 2023. This initiative was designed for the barangay officials and health workers of Barangay San Roque, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.
The primary objective of this training is to enhance the participants’ written English communication skills. It incorporated comprehensive reviews of tenses, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement rules.
The event commenced with an opening prayer, followed by the National Anthem, Pangasinan, and PSU Hymn, showcased through an audio-visual presentation. Dr. Chenee Marie Cacho, Chairperson of Secondary and Professional Education, set the tone for the day with her opening remarks that aligned with the training’s purpose.
Following this, Mrs. Generosa B. Tuazon, the barangay secretary, extended a heartfelt welcome to all on behalf of their barangay captain, Hon. Elizaldy S. Dona. She expressed their gratitude for being chosen as the participants of this extension program.
Next, Dr. Levi Jethro Balgua, the Campus Executive Secretary and a faculty member of the English Department, initiated the discussion by reviewing basic tenses, including past, present, and future. His review was designed to expand the participants’ understanding and enable them to communicate more accurately and effectively in both written and spoken language by providing context to their sentences.
Continuing the momentum, Dr. Jenylyn V. Oboza, the Vice President for Quality Assurance and a senior faculty member of the English department, expounded on the rules of subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement. She emphasized that these grammatical agreements are crucial for clear and coherent writing, allowing for a smooth flow of ideas.
Subsequently, Ms. Zarah Jane B. Annudin, the GAD Coordinator and a member of the English faculty provided clear explanations of the correct and proper use of spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Her discussion aimed to assist the participants in achieving clarity and precision in their written communication.
Concluding the event, the participants were provided with an evaluation form to assess their learning and satisfaction with the training. This initiative stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to enhancing written English communication skills within the community.
