Aiming to observe how an organization or a community maintains and uses 5S Quality Workplace Standard (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain), the faculty and non-teaching staff of the Pangasinan State University โ Alaminos City Campus (PSU-ACC) conducted their benchmarking activity at the City of Tanauan, Batangas on August 5, 2022. The said campus chose the city administration of Tanauan, led by Mayor Sonny Collantes, as it is known as one of the cities that have recorded a well-maintained practice of the 5S. In fact, said local government unit holds the Investors in People Silver Award, Prime HRM Level II Award, Philippine Quality Award, and ISO 9001:2015 accreditation.
The benchmarking activity involved the presentation of the different concepts regarding the 5S. Ms. Jacqueline A. Landicho, head of the Human Resource Management Development Office (HRMDO) of the City Government of Tanauan, discussed the fundamentals of applying the 5S method in their workplace. She highlighted the importance of tidying and organizing files and other office properties in accordance with ISO 9001:2015 and its relevance. Meanwhile, Ms. Belinda P. Rosales, the Executive Assistant IV of the HRMDO, also discussed the materials needed and additional details of applying the 5s method in the administrative office and educational institution.
Moreover, the idea of the 5S is to reduce waste while increasing productivity by maintaining an orderly workplace and employing visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results. This would help the PSU-ACC community to attain quality service to its stakeholders. Given that PSU is a title holder in Philippine Quality Award Level 3 in Quality Management and International Organization for Standardization (ISO 90001:2015) accredited, it is of great importance that there is continuous improvement in its administration. The idea to adopt the 5S method for PSU-ACC benchmarking started from the former Campus Executive Director Dr. Renato E. Salcedo and was continued by the present administration led by Dr. Jenylyn V. Oboza.
